Description

Seaton Delaval Hall was built for Admiral George Delaval between 1718 and 1729 by Sir John Vanbrugh. The hall has a central main block with two wings extending north on either side, linked by arcaded single storey galleries. The central block has an entrance front with a three storey centre, capped with a pediment with carved entablature. The door has a segmental fanlight and tall sash windows on either side, each with oversised keystones. The first floor has a wide band and segmental window with keystones, and the second floor has three windows, the middle round-headed. This central section is flanked by pairs of giant Doric columns, supporting a frieze above the first floor. On either side are three two storey bays, with the outer bays canted. The single storey galleries extend from the front of the house and enclose the forecourt, housing the stables and kitchen.
