Samuel Pepys (1633 - 1703), diarist and Secretary of the Admiralty, lived at 12 Buckingham Street from 1673 to 1688, and then at number 14 until 1701; the statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, lived at 14 Buckingham Street from 1701 to 1714; the painter William Etty (1787 - 1849) lived there from 1824 to 1848, and the painter Clarkson Stanfield (1793 - 1867) lived there from 1826 to 1832.
