Description

For Heritage at Risk 2020. Items DP264754 to DP264757 have not been catalogued due to model release issues. Photographer's note: 'Built as canalside warehouses in the early 1870s. No 46 converted for use as a school in 1876 and No 48 in 1895. Cornice and central pediment with attached bellcote to No 46. Parapet to No 48. Wall crane to centre bay of No 48 and one to each of second and fifth bays of No 46, at top floor level. School provided by Dr Barnardo. Understood to have been one of the largest ragged schools in London and the last to close, in 1908. At its height the school had more than 1,000 pupils on weekdays, and 2,400 Sunday school attendees. It also operated as the Factory Girls Club and Institute, 1877 to 1915. It has been a museum since 1990 and is run by volunteers.'
