Description

The 'Asylum for Idiots' opened in Highgate in 1847 and moved to Earlswood in 1855. It was known as 'Earlswood Asylum' by 1896. In 1926 it was renamed 'The Royal Earlswood Institution for Mental Defectives', or simply the 'Royal Earlswood Institution'. It closed as the Royal Earlswood Hospital in 1997.
