Series: Aerofilms main series post-war negatives
- Date:
- 1946 - 2006
- Reference:
- AFL03/14
- Type:
- Series containing Photographic material
The series contains: glass and film negatives in black and white of oblique aerial views in a variety of formats produced by Aerofilms between 1946 and 2006.
The negatives were assigned a numerical sequence from 1 to 700001. The last figure is the basis for the estimated quantity of negatives in the series. However, there are numerous gaps in the sequence and the actual figure is likely to be much lower. Reasons for the gaps include losses, unassigned numbers, or clients having custody of negatives.
The black and white negatives were given 'A' prefixes from 1946 to 1972 to distinguish them from the pre-war negatives. The prefix was dropped after the number of the last post-war negative had been passed. Colour negatives were given an AC prefix and although many were stored separately on account of their size, they are recorded in the same number sequence as the black and white negatives in the registers. It is likely that the first AC negative in the 5½"x 4" series is numbered 95621 and was taken in 1961, and the first 4"x2½" in the series is 248084 and was taken in 1973. The last 5½"x 4" black and white negative in the series was numbered 332554 and was taken in 1977. The series also contains 167 glass and film negatives in larger formats.
Details of each negative are recorded in registers numbered 6 to 44 on the registers handlist (AFL03/03) and these often include date, client, location and photographer. Topographical and subject access to the negatives is via the print albums (AFL03/05-AFL03/10).
