Description

In the early 1960s after reading that the Black Country was to become a smokeless zone (a result of the Clean Air Act 1956) and that the old coal-fired bottle kilns of the Potteries were to be demolished and replaced with clean electric versions Dusty Deste headed north intent on photographing not only the places but also the people and processes of the Staffordshire Potteries. The resultant images chronicle the decline of the industry and urban landscape as well as examples of the surviving businesses and their employees.

The series also includes a small number of views showing sites associated with the brewing industry in Burton on Trent and scenes in the Lake District, Cheshire etc., presumably excursions undertaken whilst based in Staffordshire. It contains 1075 negatives, 887 of which have been digitized and catalogued. Of the remainder, some appear virtually indistinguishable from negatives that have been digitized, whilst a small number are of a quality that precludes them from cataloguing.
