Description

In September 2003 two serious fires occurred on Fylingdales Moor, which lies within the bounds of the North York Moors National Park. The fires resulted in almost total destruction of the ground vegetation in 2 areas, both of which are significant in terms of their archaeological resource, and the removal of the vegetation by the fires has revealed the archaeological landscape to an unprecedented extent .

A range of survey work was undertaken by English Heritage to record the archaeology of the burnt moorland, including an initial air photo assessment, a walkover survey of the larger area, a more detailed analytical field survey for part of the area, and photogrammetric mapping.
