Description

This series comprises photographs, postcards, measured drawings, press cuttings, correspondence and examples of technical and printing data.

Photographs: this is a group of 105 negatives, 26 colour transparencies, 36 original black and white prints (5 catalogued at item level), and 6 original colour prints (3 of which are identified and catalogued to item level) dating between 1918 and 1977. Subjects include unidentified buildings and views, (family) portraits, artworks, crafts and landscapes. Some of the images may have been taken by Arthur E Ashley and Rex Wailes.

There is an additional box containing 5 postcards and 217 negatives of Costessey. There are handwritten caption lists relating to some of the images.

Postcards: a group of 26 colour and black and white postcards of various subjects. The colour examples are mainly of locations in Gloucestershire.

Another group consists of 24 black and white images, of St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmunds, St Agnes Church, Cawston, and St Mary's Church, Belchamp Walter. These have been catalogued to item level.

Measured drawings: a group of 8 measured drawings. 6 are photocopies of architects drawings (catalogued at series level)and 2 are unsigned original probably 19th-century drawings of an engine or wind pump (catalogued at item level under ME001502-ME001503).

Press cuttings: 3 illustrated cuttings from the Eastern Daily Press dated January 1977 on Norman-style buildings discovered in Queen Street, King's Lynn, during demolition work.

Correspondence: 30 lists of material transferred to the NMR between the 1950s and 1980s. Most appear to be responses to specific requests from the NBR or NMR under Cecil Farthing and Stephen Croad. Another group of 13 letters and 6 architects plans (mainly from Purcell Millar and Tritton) relate to non-NMR commissions.

Photographic technical data: Two examples of have been retained, a sketch plan of 28-32 King Street in King's Lynn recording the position and direction of the photography, and the other a 'printing map' - a guide to printing exposure times.

Exhibition catalogue for 'East Anglian Buildings' which was on display at the Castle Museum, Norwich from 16 May to 26 August 1956 and featured many images by Hallam Ashley.
