Description

A series of negatives from the archive of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, a company formed from the London and North Western Railway, Midland Railway, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and several Scottish rail companies in 1923. The photographs date from the 1880s through to the mid-1930s, and feature a variety of ecclesiastical and secular sites in counties such as Derbyshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Rutland, Dorset and Shropshire, as well as metropolitan districts such as Liverpool, Bradford, Kirklees, Leeds, Bolton and Manchester.

Many of the photographs were taken prior to the formation of the London Midland and Scottish Railway company, but, as in most cases it is not clear which of the constituent railway companies took the photographs, and for ease of searching, London Midland and Scottish Railway have been recorded as the photographers for all images. Where the original register of negatives has indicated that the London and North West Railway are likely to have been the photographers, this has been recorded in scope and content.

Some of the sites featured include Haddon Hall, Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens and Bournemouth Pier, Hellifield Peel, Rochester Castle, Lendal Bridge, Windsor Castle, Clifton Suspension Bridge, Carisbrooke Castle, Newark Castle and Hardwick Old Hall.

Ecclesiastical sites include Christchurch Priory, Southwell Minster and Bath Abbey, as well as the cathedrals of Worcester, Gloucester, Winchester, Rochester, Bristol, Exeter, Canterbury, Ely, Norwich, St Albans and Hereford.

A number of the photographs show interior and exterior views of warehouses and depots associated with various goods stations such as Oldham Road in Manchester. Additionally, there are many seaside scenes and rural landscapes.

There are six copy negatives included within the series.
