Description

The series comprises 751 negatives taken in the 1920s and 1930s showing interior and exterior views of schools, with a small number of churches and Guy’s Hospital, London also featuring. The firm’s photographer, Thomas Dunkerton, died in 1939 and the negatives were acquired by the National Buildings Record from his widow and son in 1945.

The majority of the collection features public schools, many Victorian, in England. These include Rugby School; Stowe School; St Edward’s School, Oxford; Reading School, Brighton College, Lancing College and Eastbourne College. There are a mixture of internal and external views showing both the site as a whole and individual buildings and classrooms. Some images include pupils and they are usually shown engaging in sport or academic lessons, or posed with staff. The activities of Officer Training Corps cadets at these schools also feature.

In addition to views of schools the collection includes views of Downside Abbey in Somerset, Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight and Birmingham Oratory. There are also a small number of images from Guy’s Hospital, showing the buildings and, on occasion, the patients, as well as views of the Star and Garter Home in Richmond, which provided care and accommodation for wounded ex-servicemen.

A number of prints were produced from the negatives and these are either loose prints or held in the Red Box Collection.
