Description

This collection documents the 1934-36 Office of Works restoration of The Queen's House, Greenwich, under the direction of George Chettle. It also includes material from Thomas Ford and Partners, Architects, who worked on the 1980s PSA restoration. Chettle's archive includes historical research, and project documentation, as well as photographs taken during the works. The collection also contains an album of photographs taken after the work was completed, probably in 1937. Gordon Higgot of EH suggests that they may be the work of a Country Life photographer. The photographs appear in two Country Life articles 24 April 1937 Pgs 458-463, 1 May 1937 Pgs 489-489.

The 1980s material includes notes and drawings relating to a 1985 roof survey as well as photographs and photocopies of the 1930s work, which appear to have come from Ministry of Work files.

Chettle's restoration was published in Vol. 14 in the Survey of London mongraph series in 1937.

Some material in this series was originally in registry file AA 05/636/2-3.

Material in this series has been referred to in a publication by Gordon Higgott as coming from 'English Heritage (former H.M.Office of Works Queen's house Archive)'.

Material in this series has also been used in architectural investigations archived in BF106360.
