While working on the Hospitals project between 1991-1995 RCHME survey staff visited and recorded numerous poor-law sites concentrating on their infirmary elements.
RCHME undertook a programme of further fieldwork and research from the Cambridge office between 1995-1997. The range of institutions included workhouses, infirmaries, industrial schools and children's homes with most of the sites dating between the 18th century to 1930.
Historical research was conducted for all sites including those demolished or rebuilt resulting in the EH publication in 1999 of "The Workhouse: a study of Poor Law Buildings in England."
