This survey was carried out over a two year period between 1982 - 1983 by Lucy Caffyn (Mrs L Dewhurst) with assistance from photographers of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. The survey was jointly financed by West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council and RCHME. An earlier joint venture had examined rural housing of the county from 1400 to the early 19th century. This survey followed on from that, but examined the housing of less affluent people, lower down the social scale, continuing the period into the 20th century. The survey resulted in the publication 'Workers' Housing in West Yorkshire 1750-1920' (Lucy Caffyn, 1986).
