Between April 1998 and September 2000 (revised report for The Grand Shaft Barracks, 2004), the RCHME Field Archaeological Section (Cambridge Office) carried out a detailed survey and analysis of the extensive military fortifications on the Western Heights, in Dover. The project was undertaken in conjunction with Kent County Council as part of an Interreg II programme relating to historic fortifications in Kent, Nord-Pas de Calais and West Flanders, with funding shared between the RCHME and the European Union. The survey, which involved extensive mapping, description, photography and analysis of all visible earthworks, buildings and other structures associated with the fortifications between the years 1770 and 1956, was carried out by a team of three archaeologists, two building investigators and two photographers employing a variety of techniques.
