The RCHME/CUCAP Cropmark Project was an initiative jointly funded by the Department of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings (now English Heritage) and The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England from 1981-85. The purpose of the project was to investigate systematically methods for the interpretation, mapping and archaeological classification of sites recorded from the air as crop and soil marks. The results of the investigation were published in 1989 in the volume 'The Emerging Past: Air Photography and the Buried Landscape' (R.Whimster). The project studied two distinct areas - the Welsh Marches and the Trent Valley.
