In October 2005, English Heritage took part in an analytical field survey at 1:1000 scale of earthworks on the Garth and carried out a rapid review of evidence noted by previous investigators for the development of the village as a whole. The 2005 fieldwork was carried out primarily as a training exercise for members of the Cawood Castle Gerth Group and formed part of a community-based conservation and research project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's 'Local Heritage Initiative'. A range of survey techniques were employed, from differential GPS satellite mapping to traditional graphical taped survey.
