A series of 165 slides showing bungalows and one-storey domestic homes. The buildings range from some of the earliest extant bungalows in Britain (Tower Bungalows, Birchington, Kent, designed by John Pollard Seddon) to late 20th century examples. The series includes typical interwar bungalows, post-war prefabricated bungalows, and 1960s and 1970s estate bungalows.
Several of the locations shown are 'plotland' developments of the early 20th century, where holiday homes were built for families, often from London. Materials included converted railway carriages (Selsey, West Sussex), and many of the examples in the series are now occupied year-round (e.g. Jaywick, Essex). The last remaining plotland home at Dunton Heath, Basildon, is shown in the series after its conversion into a museum.
Other interesting examples include the conversion of the nurses' home at the isolation hospital at Arne, Dorset, and a bungalow on Eel Pie Island built from repurposed materials. Other materials include corrugated iron and prefabricated buildings.
There are examples from across England, with substantial coverage in Sussex and Essex. There are also 9 slides showing bungalows in Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands.
This is part of the Sub Series: EFC01/01/05 Domestic Building Types; within the Series: EFC01/01 Series of 35mm slides; within the Collection: EFC01 Edifice Collection
