A series of 25 slides showing self-build houses constructed using traditional, environmental and modern methods.
The majority of the slides show three small developments in Lewisham built in the 1980s and 1990s using the Walter Segal timber-framed method of construction: Walters Way, Segal Close and Greenstreet Hill. The Walters Way and Segal Close projects were innovative council-run self-build schemes which enabled those on the council accommodation waiting list to build and purchase their own homes. Greenstreet Hill was built in the 1990s by a housing co-operative. The homes are good examples of modernist architecture with small pad foundations, adaptable structures, and energy-saving features.
Also shown is an interesting example of an early 21st century house at Butleigh built using infill walls of straw, bottles, and cordwood.
Almost all of the buildings shown in the series are distinctive and unique.
This is part of the Sub Series: EFC01/01/05 Domestic Building Types; within the Series: EFC01/01 Series of 35mm slides; within the Collection: EFC01 Edifice Collection
