Twenty reconstruction illustrations and one general illustration depicting Rievaulx Abbey and its component structures, and everyday life at the abbey during the phases of its growth and development. The illustrations were created between 1984 and 2006, and appear to have been commissioned largely for reproduction in English Heritage's series of visitor guidebooks for the abbey.
The set of illustrations includes four created by artist Terry Ball in the 1990s; two are reconstructions and two are present-day aerial views of the site. Please note that one of these present-day aerial views exists only in digital form (IC086/002) and was superseded by an amended version of the drawing on the same sheet (IC086/022). These present-day views were reproduced as part of orientation maps in the site guidebooks.
There are twelve reconstruction paintings created by Peter Dunn in the 1990s and 2000 in this set, illustrating structures and activities at the abbey in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
Five reconstruction sketches by Ivan Lapper depict medieval Cistercian monks and their activities at the abbey. There is a further one reconstruction drawing by Mike Legg which depicts the interior of the frater (refectory). Also, the series includes three orientation illustrations by Allan T Adams showing the site and the wider area circa 2004 - 2006. There are also five black and white preliminary sketches, created by Peter Dunn, and ten created by Terry Ball. These have not been catalogued at item level.
