Photograph album labelled 'Power Stations : Nuclear : AEI Progress 3' containing 80 black and white prints showing the various stages of construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station. Included are views of reactors 1 and 2 including details of gas holder and biological shield and thermal shield plates, intake works, boiler fabrication shop interior showing first boiler under construction and welding of boiler rings, turbine hall, monotowers, tunnel headshafts, storm water outfall drain, cable ducts and compressor house foundations. Also included are photographs documenting the movement of bottom dome of pressure vessel along rails and over Bailey bridge into gas holder of reactor.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station to be built in Britain. It was built for the Central Electricity Generating Board by A.E.I. - John Thompson Nuclear Energy Company Limited. John Laing and Son Limited and Balfour Beatty and Company Limited were contracted as civil engineers to work on the project.
