Description

Forty-four plans relating to the design, construction and renovation of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London and its associated surrounding structures. There are a number of original drawings and copies of drawings from the early twentieth century by Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (and his studio), including the original design sheets for both the first temporary wood and plaster Cenotaph erected in 1919 and the following permanent Portland Stone monument. This set also includes his designs for railings to surround the monument.

Further sheets are included relating to the construction and installation of the railings once manufactured.

There are twelve sheets of plans of the commemoration ceremonies at the Cenotaph throughout the early and mid twentieth century, showing the standing locations of Royalty, politicians, dignitaries and representatives of the Armed Forces.

There are also a number of sheets concerning new roman numerals added to the monument in 1946 to commemorate the Second World War.

This plans folder contains nine Oversized Drawings.
