Description

The 320 drawings of Deal Castle date from the eighteenth century to 2006. The earliest drawings are plans and sections of the castle, six of which were copied in the 1950s. There are early Ordnance Survey Maps from 1862 and 1911, two sketch plans made by the Royal Engineers in the 1880s and three painted drawings of new wooden stairs by the Office of Works from 1919.

Several drawings from the 1920s and 1930s by the Office of Works relate to minor refurbishments. There are five drawings of water and electrical services from 1927 and seven drawings from 1939 showing new fittings for openings and windows. There are eight drawings relating to the addition of a bathroom to the custodian's cottage by the Ministry of Works between 1948 and 1949.

A number of more general plans are included, such as those which appear in the 1966 Ministry of Public Buildings and Works guide book.

Several surveys are represented, including a Ministry of Public Buildings and Works survey of the gatehouse from 1967 and a survey of the internal walls made by the Department of the Environment in 1977.

In 1970 and 1971 the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works and its successor body the Department of the Environment produced seven drawings of the castle. These were reduced and used for designing new signs.

A number of drawings from the mid- to late-1970s show designs for refurbishment of the castle's gatehouse museum, including details of fittings and exhibitions, notably a display on the forty Captains of Deal Castle from the early 1980s.

There are fourteen oversized drawings of the castle.
