Warley Place - Brentwood

The evocative remains of the wild and natural garden created between 1875 and 1934 by the famed horticulturalist Ellen Willmott. Following Willmott's death, the house was demolished and the gardens fell into dereliction. The site remains in single private ownership with the core leased since 1977 by the Essex Wildlife Trust and managed as a nature reserve with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers. A Conservation Management Plan is informing ongoing management under Countryside Stewardship, but numerous ruinous structures surviving from Willmott's garden remain in need of urgent repairs.
