The Dovercourt lighthouses and causeway, Harwich - Tendring
Believed to be a unique example of a C19 prefabricated lighthouse and probably commissioned by Trinity House. Thought to represent an early use of screw foundations, which were helix or screw-bladed iron sections were driven into soft ground to provide solid foundations for the legs. A milestone in the history of lighthouse design and in the sequence of navigational aids developed for this important deep water harbour and are an iconic, well-regarded landscape feature. 2024 further investigations underway looking at structures below beach level to inform repair scheme.
