Details
This record was the subject of a minor enhancement on 4 August 2015. This record has been generated from an "old county number" (OCN) scheduling record. These are monuments that were not reviewed under the Monuments Protection Programme and are some of our oldest designation records. This monument includes an enclosure situated on the south facing slope of a dry valley to the south east of the settlement of Shipham. The enclosure survives as an elongated rhomboidal central area measuring approximately 63m long by 57m wide defined on three sides by a bank up to 8m wide and 0.9m high with a largely buried outer ditch of up to 5m wide and 0.5m deep and by a scarp to the remaining side which creates a raised platform. A field survey in 2009 revealed a further ditch to the east but no clear earthwork evidence for internal settlement, but did suggest the location of a possible searchlight mound in the north east corner. The date and function of the enclosure is unknown but it may represent a stock enclosure of either Iron Age or medieval date. It is known locally as ‘Longbottom Camp’.
