Details

CHITTERNE CHITTERNE DOWN SU 04 NW SU 005 476 (east side) 2/1 Robber's Stone II Inscribed stone. Circa 1840. Limestone pillar with steel plate to front, rectangular pillar about 2 metres high with flat top. Inscription plate records the death of Benjamin Colclough a highway robber, during his attempted escape from the scene of the crime at Imber, October 21st 1839, he was buried at Chitterne. "His three companions Thomas Saunders, George Waters and Richard Harris were captured and sentenced at the ensuing Quarter Sessions at Devizes to Transportation for the term of fifteen years". This stone is within the army ranges on Salisbury Plain.
