SK 76 SE CROMWELL MAIN STREET (east side) 4/42 The Old Rectory and attached 7-8-52 cottage
G.V. II
House. Formerly dower house and rectory. c.1680. For Earls of Clare. South east bay window and rear wing added 1786-88. Curved north west rear wing added 1814. Brick with hipped and gabled slate roofs. Plinth, first and second floor bands, deep coved eaves. Single roof and 2 side wall stacks. 2 storeys plus attics, 5 bays, square plan with west wing. Main north front has to right a half-glazed C18 door with moulded architrave and glazing bar overlight, flanked to left by a dummy window and to right by 2 glazing bar sashes. Beyond, to left, 2 more glazing bar sashes. Above, 5 glazing bar sashes and to right, a blocked opening. Above again, a gabled leaded dormer with a Yorkshire sash. Curved west wing has a coped parapet. East front has to left a 2-storey canted bay window with hipped roof. To left, 3 glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick heads, and to right, a C19 sash and a blocked opening. Above to left, 3 glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick heads, and to right, blocked opening. Above again, a gabled dormer with a Yorkshire sash. South side has to west a single storey brick lean-to with pantile roof, and to its right, C19 brick cottage, 2 storeys, 2 bays, with pantile roof. To left, C20 casement, and to its right, 2 casements, that to left leaded. To right again, a glazing bar sash and to right again a door, both with segmental heads. To right again, blocked opening and 2 dummy windows. Above, to left, a glazing bar sash with segmental head, and to right, a leaded casement flanked to left by a dummy window and to right by 2 similar dummy windows, all with rubbed brick heads. Interior has C17 dog leg stair with landing, panelled square newels, moulded ramped handrail and turned balusters. Principal room to north east has C18 panelled dado and moulded cornice. Early C19 fireplace with moulded eared architrave and C19 dog grate. On west wall, elliptical headed recess and fitted bookcase with dentillated shelves. Principal room to north east has 2 C17 round headed recesses matching the door architraves. Room to north west has C19 marble fireplace with panelled pilasters, and moulded cornice. Hall has panelled doorcase with scrolled brackets to hood and 2 doors with heavy roll moulded architraves. 2 C18 panelled doors.
