ST13NW STOGUMBER CP
LOWER VEXFORD 9/186 Higher Rexton
(formerly listed as pair of
cottages near Rexton Farm) 13.10.75 - II Farmhouse subsequently divided into 2 cottages, now one. Late Medieval, ceiled C16, enlarged with kitchen addition C17,
partially demolished C19, restored 1970s. Red sandstone random rubble, cob core to earlier block, thatched roof, brick
stacks gable ends. Plan: thought to be 2 cells remaining of open hall house ceiled to 3 cell and cross passage lying
roughly South-North with kitchen addition to West set into hillside, outshot on Southwest side and C20 addition to
South-east. North front: 2 storeys, 1:1:1 bays; Mainly C20 leaded casements, truncated gable end of earlier house left,
recessed centre of kitchen addition with stair turret projecting slightly right, remains of 3-light chamfered mullion
right, centre left large 2-centred arch doorframe reset from farmbuilding, C20 door. Tudor arched doorframe reset on
South front. Interior: not viewed, said to contain 4 and a half panel moulded compartment ceiling left, 3 stud
partition to South now removed to first floor right, newel stair beside fireplace with hollow moulded jambs on left
return with 4-centred arch doorframe to stairs, similar fireplace above, walls raised destroying earlier probably cruck
roof. Right chamfered beams with step and runout stops, peaked doorframes to stairs, upper one reset as cupboard,
bressumer beam to fireplace with arched head to opening right with evidence thought to suggest a curing chamber prior
to insertion of stairs; corndrying kiln left, subseqently a curing chamber with an oven inserted at a later date. (VAG
Report, unpublished SRO, October 1980, filed under Rexton Farm Cottages).
