GV II

3 houses with attached railings and gateways. c1827-1833, with mid C19 and mid C20. By PF Robinson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. Stucco, with hipped slate roofs. 3 large side wall stacks with multiple flues. Italianate style. String courses, pilasters, modillion eaves. Windows are mainly glazing bar sashes, with moulded surrounds. 3 storeys plus attics; 4 window range. The houses stand on a steep slope and are entered at first floor level from Park Terrace. Main front, facing the Park, has a recessed centre flanked by square wings, the left one higher, with pyramidal roofs. Ground floor has French windows flanked by single glazing bar windows. First floor has a verandah, 3 bays, on cast-iron columns, covering 2 French windows. To left, a large cross casement, mid C20, and to right, a round-arched glazing bar sash with keystone. Above again, 4 sashes. Attics have 2 hipped dormers. Left wing attic has a single small sash. Rear, to Park Terrace, is highly irregular. To left, a pair of scroll-topped wrought-iron gates with square piers, rendered, with pyramidal caps. To their right, a square porch with similar corner piers and panelled door. Beyond, a short spearhead railing and gate, then a round-arched gateway, ashlar, with wrought-iron gate and square piers. This building is part of an early scheme by the Duke of Newcastle to develop the Castle Park.
