KNAPP 1/53 Bird's Farmhouse 10.8.83
- II Farmhouse. C16, incorporating part of medieval hall house, enlarged one room north C18, altered subsequently,
undergoing restoration and enlargement one room south-west at time of survey (December 1984). Some cob and rubble
rendered, tile hung first floor south front, hipped roofs left to original block and to C20 addition, triple Roman
tiles, external brick stack right gable end, centre of east front and at north end. Irregular T-plan, lying
north-south, earlier part L-plan extended north, C20 addition south-west. South front: 2 storeys, 1:2 bays; C20
addition left set back, all C20 windows, right angular dormer oriel, ground floor one window left in addition, 2 to
right of porch, right return wing of 2 bays with outshot. Interior not seen, said to contain in right hand room of
south front steeply chamfered 6-panel compartment ceiling pointed arch door frame giving access to rear 2-cell wing,
centre fine moulded 6-panel compartment ceiling with unusual arrangement of moulded wooden lintel to fireplace set on
moulded timber side posts with a moulded shelf above, base of a cruck post in east wall and fine moulded 4-centred arch
door frame to right of fireplace. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, January 1981).
