II Parish church. 1839, by W. A. Nicholson, re-using some late C13
fragments. Rendered brick, some green sandstone rubble. Lead
roofs hidden behind high parapets or battlements. West tower,
nave with north aisle and south porch, chancel with polygonal
east end. Plinth and regularly placed buttresses around entire
church, the latter crowned with ornate pinnacles. West tower
with 3 stage angle buttresses and a pointed west window with 2
pointed cusped lights, panel tracery, hood mould and head label
stops. Quatrefoil above, with a blind lancet on the north and
south sides. Clock above on north side. Bell openings on all 4
sides, each a small pointed opening with 2 round cusped lights,
mouchette, hood mould and head label stops. Moulded eaves above,
with ornate openwork parapet and 8 ornate pinnacles. West end of
north aisle with pointed window with 2 cusped semi-circular
headed lights, flowing tracery, hood mould and head label stops.
North side of aisle with 2 similar windows flanking single
pointed window with 3 pointed cusped lights and 3 oculi. East
end of north aisle with lancet with internal cusped light and
tracery, hood mould and head label stops. Moulded eaves and
ornate open-work parapet above with pinnacles. Chancel with
single pointed window in north side with 3 pointed, cusped
lights, 3 oculi, hood mould and head label stops. Polygonal
east end with 3 windows, all pointed with 3 cusped pointed
lights, ornate tracery, hood moulds and head label stops. South
side of chancel with single pointed window with 3 cusped pointed
and ogee headed lights, 3 oculi, hood mould and head label stops.
Battlements with pinnacles run round top of chancel with ornate
east finial. East gable of nave with ornate openwork parapet and
ornate cross finial. South side of nave with 2 pointed windows
each with 2 semi-circular headed, cusped lights, flowing tracery,
hood mould and head label stops. Gabled porch to south with east
and west blind lancets; pointed, continuously chamfered south
doorway with hood mould, head label stops and C20 traceried
openwork wire doors. Inner doorway with pointed head,
continuously chamfered surround and plank door. Porch crowned
with ornate open-work parapet, pinnacles and cross finials.
Interior with west gallery with traceried panelling and ribbed
plank door beneath leading to tower. Late C13 north arcade of 3
bays, with pointed double chamfered heads, octagonal piers,
keeled and semi-circular responds, both with fillets; C19 hood
moulds and heads. Broad, shallow pointed C19 chancel arch with
continuous chamfer, hood mould and head label stops. All the
windows with internal hood moulds and head label stops. C19 tie
beam roofs, that in chancel combined with ornate tiernes and
tiercerons. C19 pine pews with hinged doors. C19 altar rail,
polygonal pulpit and C15 octagonal font with large quatrefoils on
bowl supported on a cluster of filleted shafts. 11 roundels of
C16 stained glass re-set in nave windows.
