NEWTON WITH CLIFTON SD 43 SE SD 476 318 Ward's House Bridge (No.23) 10/45 - GV II

Accommodation bridge over Lancaster Canal, c.1797, Engineer John Rennie. Large rock-faced sandstone blocks. Elliptical arch with triple keystones, bands, humped deck and parapets with rounded coping, pilastered ends. Masonry on outer face of south east corner has crudely inscribed initials in lettering probably contemporary with the building of the bridge "I ( ) W" and "IK PA". Forms group with Bridge No.22, Lea Lane at SD 478 316 (q.v.).
