SD 82 SE BACUP TODMORDEN ROAD 7/64 Nos. 2 and 3 The Greens

- II House, 3 builds in C18 (datestones variously 1732, 1766, 1770),
now 2 dwellings. Watershot coursed sandstone blocks with quoins, slate roof
with gable copings and kneelers (except right end), 2 chimney stacks on
the ridge and one at each gable. Double depth 3-bay plan extended at
each end to make 5 bays, with projecting porch to centre. Two storeys;
2-storey gabled porch has quoins, gable coping and kneelers, glazed door
in pedimented architrave, the pediment inscribed "1770", at 1st floor
a later C19 round-headed window with Ionic colonnettes and scrolled
keystone, above which is a square datestone with raised decoration and
lettering L ; rainwater head to right of porch lettered I M. To the

left are 2 large coupled windows on each floor, to the right one window
on each floor, all these top-hung casements with glazing bars and plain
stone surrounds; vertical joint between 4th and 5th bays marked by quoins
to 4th, and on each floor of 5th bay one sashed window with glazing
bars and plain stone surround. Left return wall has blocked round-headed
attic window; rear has inter alia a 4-light flush-mullion window at
ground floor of 1st bay, and in side wall of outshut a moulded
doorway with slab canopy on beaked brackets, and above this a large
carved datestone with raised lettering (part damaged) L? surrounded by

scrolled cartouche with scallops and a head, and set in a shouldered
architrave. Interior: No. 2 has stone staircase with moulded risers,
stick balusters, curtail; and a moulded rectangular stone fireplace with
linenfold fan on lintel, containing a heavily decorated iron grate with
feathered and foliated back plate; No. 3 has one very large room on each
floor, the lower with a fielded panel door (the top panels pierced with
hearts), and an exceptionally wide stone staircase to the upper room:
said to have been used for early Methodist meetings. House belonged to
Maden family.
