II

Stableblock. c1825. By Thomas Cundy, Sen. and Jun., for Heathcote family. Coursed rubble stone with plinth, quoins and stone dressings, and Welsh slate roof with ashlar parapet and central tower. U plan, 1 and 1½ storeys, in classical style. Symmetrical design ranged round 3 sides of quadrangle, the 2 opposing sides a mirror image, of door, 2 2-light casements, door and 2 2-light casements. Lintels here and elsewhere have keystones and which, in case of doors, are triple, the door jambs being rusticated. Central range symmetrical about mid point has, in left half, door, 2-light, double door in slightly projecting section with above at eaves level a fanlight within moulded pediment, 2-light, door, and 2-light. Single doors mainly part-glazed. In centre a slightly projecting section of 3 double doors under large moulded pediment with loft door within round arch. On roof above pediment a tower of 2 stages surmounted by small cupola, ball and weathervane. On first stage a painted and gilded clock face with Roman numerals and bull's eye window in centre. The stage above is open with an arch to each side. Each of the wing arms has a pedimented end with fanlight within larger blank arch. Dormers, wing and extensions to rear of central section. Originally built as the stable block to Normanton Park, demolished in late 1940's. Pevsner.
