SK 91 SE PICKWORTH Lime Kiln
(OS Ref SK988138)
2/191
II
Lime Kiln. Circa late C18 or early C19. Limestone rubble. Circular on plan, built
into bank, inside quarry; with semi-circular opening at front, corbelled up to large
timber lintel and with stoking hole at back of opening.
Historic note: John Clare, the poet, reputedly worked as a limeburner here in 1817.
From his earnings of 9 shillings a week he saved enough money to buy a book in which
to write his poems. But he was dismissed by his employer for wasting time
'scribbling'.
