Shop: C15, late C17 or early C18, mid C19; Smooth render to Broad
Street, painted brick gable to left: some brick-nogged timber-
framing to rear, and English-bond brickwork: slate, tiled and flat
roofs. Square block with internal courtyard: 2 storey, some lofts.
To Broad Street, 3 windows wide- with plain rendered projecting
gable left, right return moulded plinth, single blocked window,
moulded sill with end consoles, flat, eared surround to window,
projecting moulded head on consoles. Front, plinth, paired similar
window; mid C20 shop front on right. Above, gable painted
brickwork, right return rendered: plain string course. Two-pane
sash window, projecting moulded sill on brackets, plain eared
raised surround, with plain head with cambered top; main front
paired similar windows each end, single in centre. Above parapet
gable with moulded coping, apex finial, 4-pane wooden window,
pointed head, sill as first floor windows: roof behind slated. To
right plain parapet coping, flat roof behind. Left return front
mid C20 brickwork where exposed, rear first floor part close
studded timber, brick nogged: 3 light mullion and transom wooden
window, to first floor, with bressumer and wallplate exposed.
Ground floor largely covered by housing to conveyer belt. Left
gable timber-framed (see interior). Beyond early C18 brick wing,
set back width of gable, lean-to in front: tiled. Ground floor
obscured by single-storey wing, not of special interest. Beyond
boarded door in heavy frame. Left gable 2-light mullion and
transom window first floor, 3-light mullion to loft. Brick
chimney on side.
Interior: Slate-roofed gabled wing: ground floor heavy ceiling
beams, central off surviving main posts, with curved brace to one,
First floor subdivided by timber-framed wall: other 3 walls rear
room close-studded framing: double chamfer visible to one wall post
in cross wall. In wing behind a C17 door, 3 boards with moulding
at joints. Loft: 4 bay roof, 1 full, 2 half trusses, arch-braced
collar, 'V' struts above shaped to give quatrefoil in top, bottom
section ogee. Two pairs flat purlins, square ridge, 3 tiers wind
braces in each bay, shaped to give trefoil where they meet. Gables
tie-beam and collar, heavy braces to wall posts below on rear, some
studs survive at front: struts to collar, plain 'V' struts above.
Upper floor of slated wing originally open to roof, loft formed
probably C17. A very important medieval survival.
