GV II

Farmhouse. Mid-C18 remodelling of C17 or earlier structure. Brick with hipped plain tiled roofs and large brick stacks. H-plan. Two storeys, attic with dormers and cellar; dentilled eaves cornice. Windows have gauged flat heads, moulded architraves and,are mainly 12-pane sashes. South-west entrance front: 1:3:1 bays; central part has two ground and three first floor windows; two gabled dormers with 6-pane sashes; central entrance has moulded flat-canopy on shaped brackets and a half-glazed door. Projecting single-bay wings have a cellar door and window; ground floor window of left wing and first floor window of right wing are blind. South-east front: five bays; central bay breaks forward slightly and is pedimented; it has a tripartite first floor sash window and the entrance beneath has an open pediment, moulded architrave and half-glazed door. Interior: central ground floor room was hall of earlier building and has broach stop-chamfered ceiling and large fireplace. Small room to rear of former hall has raised and fielded panelling. South wing retains open well staircase in central part with turned balusters, columnar newels and moulded handrail. Deeply moulded cornice to stair hall and flanking ground floor rooms. Room to south-west has large elaborate fireplace with engaged Doric columns. Ironing stove in first floor room at rear. Part of the Winnington Estate. (VCH 4, p 266; BOE p 23).
