DIDMARTON OLDBURY ON THE HILL ST 88 NW 9/63 Church of St. Arild 6.9.54 GV II*

Small Anglican church. Early English foundation, mostly now Perpendicular of late C15/early C16. Random coursed rubble stone with tower faced in roughcast, stone slate roof with coped east end to nave. West tower, nave and chancel, small north porch. Tower of 3 stages with stringcourses and stepped diagonal buttresses on lowest stage, decorative stone 2-light belfry louvres on top embattled stage, and 2-light west window. Gabled north porch has alternate ovolo and hollow moulded inner archway and tall chamfered pointed outer archway. Scattered fenestration to nave, 3-light ogee headed window with square hoodmould to north side and 4 different windows to south. Chancel east window of 3 lights with geometrical tracery. Tall pointed tower arch. Interior has plain plastered ceiling, box pews of C18 remain on south side only, with 2-tier pulpit. In very poor repair at time of survey (February 1986) and rarely used.
