ST 79 NW STINCHCOMBE PARK LANE
3/101 (south side) Stancombe Park II
Detached country house. c1840, but considerably rebuilt in 1880, following a fire.
Limestone ashlar, Welsh slate low pitched hipped roof to main block, squared and
dressed limestone in principal wing and attached out-buildings. Compact main block in
two parts, parallel range, with three related buildings forming rectangular courtyard
to west. Original entrance front, to south, two storeys, 5-windowed, sashes with
bars, in reveals, and extended to plinth level at ground floor, central 6-panel door
under rectangular fanlight in 4-column Doric portico approached 5 stops; return
front, right, 2+3+2-windowed; including central hexagonal bay; on both these fronts
plain string band at first floor, and cornice with mutules to low parapet. To left of
south front, lower wing in two storeys, 2-windowed, 3-light sashes, and left of this,
attached by garden wall at parapet height and with gated opening, 1-storey
slate-hipped roof unit, 4-windowed, sashes with bars in plat-band, central 6-panel
door in architrave. West front, main block, to courtyard, central pediment with
pilasters, two storeys, 3-windowed, 3-light sashes, modern door off-centre right.
Courtyard completed by one-storey detached block to west, and two storey, parallel
range carriage house with wide flat elliptical opening, to north. Interior of principal block panelled doors and linings, and divided stair, said to
have come from demolished Ridge House, Wotton-under-Edge.
