Details

SX 86 NW BROADHEMPSTON BROADHEMPSTON 2/78 Manor Croft, including garden wall immediately to South-west and gate pier immediately to North-east. GV II Small house. Circa 1840, possibly built by the Palks who erected the adjoining Salem Chapel in 1844. Rubble walls with larger dressed quoins. Shallow pitched hipped slate roof with deep overhanging eaves. Brick stack to either end. Double depth plan with 2 principal front rooms and central stair hall, service rooms at rear. Central stairhall. Later C19 rear wing to left with C20 extension along rear wall. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front with central door. Original 16- pane sashes, first floor centre is 12-panes. All are without horns with flat stone arches. Original 6 panel front door with rectangular fanlight above and panelled surround. Contemporary porch with door canopy supported on wooden columns and trelliswork at the sides. Flat roof extension built on at rear adjoining an intermediate wing. Interior: original joinery virtually intact with 6 panelled doors to main ground floor rooms, open well staircase with column newels, stick balusters, wreathed handrail, carved brackets and panelling below. Shallow arch from front to back of hall with pilasters either side. The smaller right-hand front room had panelled shutters, surround to window and cupboards either side of fireplace. Fireplace has simple wooden surround with mantel supported on brackets. Left-hand front room is now double depth and contains marble fireplace with ornate arched iron grate. Panelled shutters and surround to window. Both front rooms and the hall have simple coved cornices. Behind the right-hand front room is the former kitchen with large open fireplace with wooden surround and mantel and cupboards either side. First floor front bedrooms have C19 fireplaces with ornate arched cast iron grates. This small mid C19 house survives virtually intact with some good quality original features. To include tall rubble garden boundary wall immediately to south-west and square gate piers directly to north-east.
