II

Parish church. 1875 by R.C. Sutton following bequest from E.C. Walker. Knapped flint with Bath stone dressings. Slate roof. 4 bay nave. 1 bay chancel, short transepts, S porch. Gothic Revival Style. W end has 2 pointed arched windows with geometrical tracery, upper round windows to centre with inner quatrefoil and outer trefoils and quatrefoils. Central and angle buttresses. Stone plinth, string courses and hood moulds with stiff leaf terminals. Coped gable parapet. Bellcote. Nave N elevation: three 2 light pointed arched windows, geometrical tracery throughout, stone bands at sill, impost and cornice. Similar to S with porch in W bay, cusped pointed entrance arch, moulded archivolt, shafts in jambs, buttresses, coped gable parapet with cross at apex. Transepts have large 3 light windows, angle buttresses, coped gable parapets with apex crosses, lancets in W returns. Chancel has lower ridge, coped parapet to nave E end with apex cross. 3 light E end window, angle buttresses, blocked window on S return, 3 lancets on N return. Vestry to NE of transept, low and gabled, entrance to E with round window above, lancet to N. Organ bay to SE with gable to E, 2 blocked lancets. Interior: moulded and pointed chancel and transept arches on engaged column responds with foliate capitals, ornamented spandrels to transept arches, engaged colonnettes flanking E window. Nave roof has pseudo single hammer beam with collar truss, quatrefoil and trefoil openings, arched braces. Ceiled chancel and transept roofs. Gothic round pulpit at NE corner of nave, engaged shafts and projecting heads of apostles. Similar Gothic font at W end, quatrefoil base with 4 marble shafts to circular bowl. Chancel screen moved to S transept, wrought ironwork. Late C19 and early C20 glass. Late C20 hall extending to SE not of special interest.
