TL 72 SE STISTED COGGESHALL ROAD
(north side) 4/262 Hunter's Roost GV II House. Late C15/early C16, extended in C20. Timber framed, plastered with some
exposed framing, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. Complex plan comprising:
(1) C15 main range of 3 bays aligned approximately N-S, with C20 axial stack
immediately N of middle bay, (2) parallel range to E of N part, with C16 floor
structure, (3) one-bay wing to E of S part, apparently constructed in early C20
of old oak timber exposed externally, or substantially rebuilt from a C16
original, (4) C20 extension to N. 2 storeys. All windows are C20 casements,
mainly with rectangular leading. C20 doors. The main range has jowled posts,
exceptionally heavy girts, and an edge-halved and bridled scarf in the W
wallplate. The N bay has a chamfered axial beam, and joists plastered to the
soffits. The studding of the lower storey of the N wall has been removed. The
axial stack is apparently C20, but may incorporate or replace a C16 stack. S of
the stack is a chamfered axial beam with step stops, and plain joists of
horizontal section jointed to it with unrefined soffit tenons. Crownpost roof
with axial bracing, complete except for the severance of the collar-purlin at
the stack. Between the middle and S bays a short crownpost is mounted on a
collar at half-height, a rare construction whch occurs at Rayne Hall, Rayne, and
Round Hill House, Lamarsh (item 2/74, q.v.). In the SW corner of the ground
floor is an C18 corner cupboard with fluted pilasters, moulded and profiled
shelves, spheroid head and dentilled cornice, attached to the building. The
parallel range has a chamfered longitudinal beam and plain joists of horizontal
section jointed to it with soffit tenons with diminished haunches, a C16
structure, but it is not clear whether more of the range is of this date; it may
be re-used from another building. The SE wing is well constructed of old
timber, jointed and pegged, with a jetty to the E with exposed joists of
horizontal section, but all or most of it is of early C20 construction; the roof
is of softwood.
