ST 68 NW ALVESTON GLOUCESTER ROAD (west side) 8/61 Church of St. Helen - II Parish church. 1885 by Henry Lloyd. Rock faced snecked rubble, stone
dressings, plain tiled roofs with ridge coping, raised coped verges, kneelers
and cross finials. West tower, nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry.
Decorated style. 3-stage tower has pointed arched door with drip mould and
relieving arch, 3-light window above, 2-light windows at 2nd and 3rd stages, all
with drip mould and relieving arch, with bell louvres at 3rd stage, south side
has clock at 2nd stage and stair turret with slit windows and spire with
weathervane, battlemented pinnacled top, weathered string courses and buttresses.
5-bay nave has 3 windows to north and 2 to south, all 3-light, 3-bay chancel
has 3-light east window and 2-light to south, shaped corbels and weathered
buttresses, porch has pointed arched door as at tower, vestry has door in plain
chamfered surround and lancet window. Interior: nave has arch-brace and
collar roof with shaped stone stops to arch-braces, tall pointed arch in
chamfered surround to tower, wider pointed arch in same surround to chancel,
windows in splayed reveals, south door in segmental headed chamfered surround,
chancel roof of same construction, pointed arched door to vestry. C19 stone
pulpit, Decorated style, 6-sided with marble shafts to base and clustered marble
shafts to edges, Norman bowl font with scalloped faces, removed from the old
Church of St. Helen (q.v.), early Victorian royal arms. (Sources: Verey, D.
