ROTHWELL LS26 CHURCH SIDE (west side) Methley Two chest tombs and 3 gravestones arranged in irregular line southwards from approx. 2 metres south of south aisle of Church of St. Oswald

Two chest tombs and three gravestones. Sandstone. Dates and identities as follows:- (1) Chest tomb of Thomas Smith of Methley (1731), his wife (1725) and son (etc.); (2) on opposite side of path, approx. 5 metres from aisle wall, chest tomb of Thomas Leake of Pinder Green (1766), his wife (1764), and David Crosfield (1767); (3) abutting the south-east corner of this, gravestone of David Leake of Coney Moor (1764); and approx. 3 and 8 metres respectively south of the same chest tomb, the gravestones of: (4) Webster of Methley (1668); and (5) Dorothy, wife of John Locke (1675) Details as follows:- (i) lid has bevelled edges and plaited border, decorated head, but is cracked diagonally through a recess for an inserted panel, corner missing, and side panels worn; (2) bevelled edge, undecorated; (3) at the head a shouldered panel containing an urn with foliated surround, and at the foot a winged head; (4) fully lettered but illegible in upper half, the lower identifying various members of Webster family; (5) mostly illegible.
