Country House, 1880, for John Mills. On site of earlier manor house.
Coursed rockfaced sandstone rubble, with ashlar quoins and dressings.
Lakeland slate roofs. Jacobethan style. 2 storey and basement. 3-bay
(west) entrance front, has slightly-projecting central 4-stage tower with
projecting one-storey porch. 2 steps up to round-headed opening, with keyed
moulded arch and panelled spandrels, flanked by paired pilasters. Cornice,
shallow parapet with ball finials at angles and flat lead roof. Chamfered
one-light and mullioned windows, with sashes, under floating cornices;
glazing bars in upper sashes on ground and first floors. 5-light window on
3rd stage, 3-light on 4th stage; shallow parapet and flat lead roof. Left
bay has 3-light windows, stepped oversailing at eaves, and gabled dormer
with shaped kneelers. Gabled right bay has square bay window, projecting
from right corner, with balustraded parapet surmounted by arms and crest of
Mills family. Corniced transverse stack at right. 4-bay right return has 4
steps up to glazed double doors, overlight and sidelights, in 2nd bay.
2-and 3-light windows. Octagonal 2-storey tower, with similar one-light
windows, plain parapet and large recessed lantern with domical lead roof,
projects from right corner. Lantern has paired sashes flanked by fluted
pilasters and inverted volutes. 6-bay garden front (east), has exposed
basement. 2 left end bays gabled, with inscribed and dated cartouche at
right on first floor. Similar windows. Semicircular-plan oriel window, on
ground floor of 4th bay, has plain undersailing on offset buttress with
carved colonnette, and recessed conical roof. Off-centre dormer window with
paired sashes and domical roof. Gabled dormer in 5th bay. Garden terrace
has short retaining wall with balustraded parapet, elliptical-headed niche
in east face, and 2 flights of steps, adjoining octagonal tower. INTERIOR:
stair hall has fluted and acanthus-enriched pulvinated frieze and moulded
cornice to Jacobean-style panelled ceiling. Stone basket-headed fireplace
with wood Classical surround. Open-well staircase has carved strings,
turned balusters, carved square newels with reeded ball finials, moulded
handrail, ramped at end, and panelled dado. 3-bay wood arcade at head of
stair. Similar ceilings and fireplaces in dining room and drawing room,
which also has pedimented Adam-style doorcase and elliptical-arched
inglenook with Adam-style chimney-piece under panelled coving, flanked by
shell-headed niches. Other ground-floor rooms have bay-leaf-moulded ceiling
cornices.
