Details

House. Early C19 with later C19 and C20 alterations. It is constructed of painted coursed ashlar and dressed limestone with limestone dressings, all under a modern concrete tiled roof. Exterior: It is of two storeys and is arranged on two frontages; the principal east elevation is of three bays, and the secondary south east elevation comprises three bays. The east elevation has three eight over eight hornless sashes with glazing bars set within plain architraves at first floor and two full height French doors with marginal glazing bars. To the south there is an arched doorway with an edge roll surround with a six panelled door with hand and wreathed knocker beneath a wreathed and radiating fanlight. The returning south east elevation comprises one full height canted bay and one first floor canted bay above a modern two bay shop front; both bays are topped with a decorative dentil cornice.

Interior: This comprises two principal ground floor rooms arranged each side of the entrance hall with the shop to the south and west. The main room, behind the east elevation has a good later C19 marble fire surround with scrolled brackets and a decorative plaster cornice with repeating floral devices. The second room to the south of the hall also has a good though slightly plainer cornice. There is an axial stair rising in the southern range with a door with an internal fanlight above at ground floor and a balustrade with a turned newel and stick balusters at first floor. There are two bed rooms off the axial corridor to the south east and one to the east with two to the rear. Two of these have some decorative plasterwork and all doors to the corridor have elaborated architraves with fluting and dies in the angles with roundels set within. The shop interior is entirely modern and is not of interest.

Summary of Importance

No. 1 Fosseway, an imposing dwelling dating from the early C19 is of special architectural interest on account of the good handling of the principal facade, the quality of the detailing seen in the ashlar, doors and windows and the decorative treatment and its degree of completeness, despite the recent alterations. The interior of the building also retains fixtures of interest, including door and stair carpentry, fire surrounds and decorative plasterwork. The replacement of its roof cladding is regrettable but nevertheless, the building retains a good deal of special architectural and historic interest.
