MIDDLESBROUGH FERRY ROAD. NZ 42 SE (4921) 1/35 Winch house, adjoining railings, wall, gates and gatepiers, c.40m south west of Transporter Bridge. G.V. II Winch house and adjoining railings, wall, gates and gatepiers, at entrance to Tees Transporter Bridge, 1911, by G.C. Imbault (Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co. Ltd.), engineer; built by Sir William Arroll & Co. Ltd; railings, gates and gatepiers by Hill and Smith(Brierley Hill, Staffs). Red engineering brick; Welsh slate roof; iron railings, gates and gatepiers and glazed brick boundary wall. Winch house: one storey, 2 windows, and boarded door under concrete lintel at right end. 16-light windows with single top left and right casement panes. Concrete lintels and sills. Brick stack at left corner. Right return has large boarded double doors. Rear shows 2 similar windows. Adjoining left spike-topped railings and 2-leaf gates with slender square gatepiers with crown and ball-on-stem finials. Adjoining right similar railings, short boundary wall, and 2 similar one-leaf gates and gatepiers. A further run of railings links with corner of bridge keeper's house (q.v.). INTERIOR of winch house : winch drum (76cm diam. x 244 cm long) powered by two 30-horse-power-series wound D.C. electric motors, supplied by renewed semi-conductor rectifiers. Winch takes 2 endless cables which drive the moving carriage on the Transporter Bridge (q.v.). Included for group value.
