8/1 Castlewich including adjoining store on east and garden walls to front.
II
House, store adjoining and garden wall. House circa. late C16, extended with 2-storey porch circa C17. Right-hand wing rebuilt circa early C18 and partly remodelled in C19. Extended to rear in circa early C19. Probably built for the Crabbe family. Rubblestone with large granite quoins on right-hand hipped end. Slate hung to rear. Granite string above ground floor continuing across front of left-hand wing and around 2-storey porch. Asbestos slate roof with gable end to left and cement washed scantle slate roof hipped on right. Hipped slate porch. Brick stack in right-hand hipped end, stone stack with brick shaft in ridge to right of porch. Slate hung stack and large stone stack to rear in later extension and remains of lateral stone stack with large granite quoins to rear of left-hand wing. Shaft removed. Original plan probably 3-room and cross passage with hall on left. Porch added and right-hand side rebuilt. Extended on south west to rear, to form 'L' shaped plan. Early stair- case projection to south east of remains of lateral stack on rear, removed in C20. Two-storey, regular, 4 window north front. Ground floor with wide opening on left with cut stone flat arch and granite cill. C19 6-pane sash. To right, in porch, chamfered flat painted arch possibly early C17 and restored in C19. Chamfered jambs with run-out stops. Circa C18 plank door with strap hinges. To right, late C19/20 bay window with further 4-pane sash to right beneath cut stone flat arch. Above, on left, 4-pane sash in partly blocked opening with wide timber lintel. Four-pane sash in porch and two 4-pane sashes to right. Interior; ground floor with wide through passage, blocked to rear by later extensions. Room on left, originally hall, later used as dairy. Ceiling plastered. Fireplace to rear lateral stack blocked. Granite steps up to door leading out to through passage between house and adjoining store on left-hand gable end. Granite salt troughs flanking steps on interior. Large room to right of through passage with earlier partly blocked fireplace backing onto passage. Chamfered granite lintel, probably reused, to rear in later extension. Circa C17 doorcase leading from 2 storey porch on first floor. Roof timbers; left-hand, earlier wing with timbers renewed. To rear of porch, over cross passage, 3 heavy principals, chamfered with cambered, side pegged collars. Ridge renewed. Evidence of trenched purlins on porch side. Slightly later timbers to porch and circa late C18. collar rafter roof of 6 bays to right-hand wing. Roof timbers to rear extensions not inspected. Attached on left-hand gable end, store of one storey with loft, circa mid C18. Rendered rubblestone and small timber framing with rag slate roof. Gabled on ridge and hipped on left. Continued in catslide to rear. Large opening on front and through passages on right leading. through to rear of house. Mason's mitre on re-used lintel to door on rear of store. Rubblestone wall to front of house enclosing garden with mounting block on left.
