SS 21 SW MORWENSTOW 3/68 Bottaborough Farmhouse
- - II Farmhouse. C17 or earlier origins, 1950s alterations. Rendered stone with cob
above to front and left gable end, rendered stone to rear, right gable end stone.
Massive stone ridge chimney, left gable end chimney brick. Slate roof largely
replaced with asbestos slates. 3-room and cross passage plan with newel stair to
rear of cross passage, stair originally in rear projection. House widened to rear
with rear outshuts to left and right of stair, roof raised at rear in 1950s.
Evidence of former garret storey of the late C17 in present roofspace. 2 storeys.
5-window asymmetrical front with off-centre 1950s gabled porch replacing former 2-
storey porch. Ground floor windows: left, 16-pane sash; to right of porch C20 2-
light casement, 4 panes per light; right, similar 2-light casement, 2 panes per
light. First floor windows: one C20 2-light casement, 4 panes per light; two,
similar; three, circa late C17 2-light casement .with leaded panes; four, C20 2-
light casement, 4 panes per light; five, circa late C17 2-light casement with some
leaded panes. Late C17 4-plank studded door leads into through passage. Ovolo-
moulded doorway to rear of passage has bar stops. Chamfered stopped doorway
between ground floor room right and middle room. Wide newel stair to rear of
passage has softwood staircase'above probably late C17 oak stair. 3 late C17
chamfered, stopped doorways lead from the top of the stairs into first floor rooms,
similar doorway into first floor room right. Boxed in cross beams in some first
floor rooms. Steeply-pitched tie beam roof with collars pegged into principals,
principals halved and pegged at apex. Walls in roofspace plastered. 1 stud and
plaster partition wall in roofspace, and remains of front window with timber sill.
Ground floor fireplaces to large stone stack partially blocked, probably concealing
earlier features. Ground floor room left has large fireplace with fireplace beam
and cloam oven. Partially-blocked probably ovolo-moulded rear stone doorway leads
into storage space under stairs. 2-light C14 or early C15 pointed arched stone
traceried window, formerly in upper storey of 2-storey porch, has cusped lights and
is constructed out of a single piece of stone, and is in the possession of the
present owner. Ovolo-moulded timber 2-light window, formerly in right gable end
lighting 3rd storey, also in possession of present owner.
