GV II Farmhouse, cottage and barn. Circa C17 with possibly earlier build and
alterations of C19 and C20. 1 plastered cob range with hipped slate roof,
partly renewed, axial brick chimney; a more ambitious adjoining slatestone
rubble hall range with granite dressings, slate roof and projecting rear lateral
stack with set-offs, the chimney rebuilt in concrete blocks rendered in
imitation roughcast. Single depth on ground floor with service additions to
rear. Attached at lower end a 2nd range, single depth, 2 rooms. Complex
history, the 2 ranges were separate buildings until the late C19; the hall range
may have had a detached kitchen. Hall range with sprocketted hipped roof to
right gable end, 2-storey, 2 windows wide with gabled, 2-storey porch at front
right, upper storey rebuilt late C20 with 2-light timber gable window with
glazing bars, new lintel, sill etc. Outer porch moulded granite 4-centred arch
under square-headed hood mould with square label stops and spandrel carvings of
bull within triangle. Elaborate stops to base of outer door jambs consist of
sculpted ball motifs in half-lozenge and lozenge. 6-light, granite, mullioned,
ground floor hall window, 3-panes per light under moulded hood. First floor
windows, two 3-light casements with glazing bars under wooden lintels. Hall has
slatefloor, closely-spaced axial floor beams with cross beam and evidence for
stair to left of fireplace. Fireplace with chamfered granite jambs with reverse
straight cut stops. 2-storey, 3-window cob range attached at right gable end
has lower roof line and entrance through C20 door glazed with small panes at
front right. Ground floor window left C20 sash, ground floor window right, 3-
light casement with glazing bars and first floor windows left and centre 2-light
casements with glazing bars; smaller window opening above door. Ground floor
room left has sawn ceiling beams, slate floor and large fireplace with second
flue to cloam oven. 2nd stack, now blocked, to rear wall with raised hearth,
known as cheese chimney. Roof with pegged principals. 2 buildings adjoining
these ranges included for group value; cottage: formerly bank barn attached to
left gable end of hall range; barn with loft above attached to right gable end
of cob range. Barn has hipped corrugated iron roof and boldly projecting
external stair flight of rubble stone. The cob range has replacement
fenestration.
